Giving back to the community
Northern Garden of Life is committed to helping provide for the those in need in the town of Ashland. During the 2009 season, 90% of our production and sales were donated to The Brick in Ashland, Wisconsin.  It was a very successful production season, with over 400 families in need receiving fresh vegetables that may have otherwise not been available.  We will  continue this program in 2010.

Blooms for life

New in 2010 is the Northern Garden of Life Flower Patch, with sunflowers, zinnias, larkspur, and a a myriad of other colorful blooms.  As of the middle of July, the first boquets have been harvested, and we expect to reach full bloom approximately August 1.  Blooms for life is under construction, as we hope to dedicate these colorful flowers  or the money raised from the sales of these flowers to new mothers who have chosen  to raise their new baby, when the world around them has encouraged them to end the life of the child.  We never stand in judgment, but we commit our lives and resources to helping where help is needed.   Currently, we are hoping to find a gardener who loves flowers that would love to help create and help to run this program.  Use the contact us page to let us know if you would be willing to participate.   Remember blooms for life, and help us change the life of someone in need.

Teaching people how to work

During harvest time in 2009,  we we were able to provide opportunities for those who have been helped by the Brick to give back some of their time, by helping to harvest the produce that goes to the Brick.   Last year 6 young men were involved in the farm, helping out in various aspects.  They were taught the basics of crop care and harvest, as well as how to prepare for market.    One thing is for sure, farming isn't for everyone, but it sure builds character as rivulets of sweat roll down your back as you haul endless 50 lb crates of onions out of the field while horseflies try to remove your cheek, or  as you muck around in 6'' of fine Wisconsin mud trying to wrestle the last of the sweet yellow watermelons out of the October monsoons.  What a life!
